The course gives an introduction into Hubbell's Unified, Neutral Model of Biodiversity. In particular, the course studies the possibilities of estimating parameters of Hubbell's model with the data.

• Hubbell's model: brief introduction into dynamics in a local community.
• Consequence: Species abundance models, alternative models and fitting, alternative measures of diversity (with computer practicals)

Tue

• A more thorough introduction into local community dynamics.
• (No lectures on afternoon) - seminar at the Department of Botany at 15:00, Jari Oksanen (University of Oulu) - When you look into CCA, the CCA looks back into you: Community ordination revisited.

Wed

• Further consequences: Incidence functions, species--area relations, sample size and diversity
• Fitting species abundance models, simulating local communities (with computer practicals)

Thu

• Hubbell's second model: metacommunity as a network of local communities
• Consequences: Metacommunity landscape, beta diversity
• Practicals on simulating

Fri

• Metacommunity landsapes: further issues
• Species pools and metacommunities
• General ideas and discussion
